133cm x 144cm / 52 x 56.6 inches.

Antique, early Showa / Taisho era folk textile. Japanese indigo dyed cotton (aizome). Very deep, dark blue. Tsutsugaki technique was used to dye the fabric. A paste is applied by hand before dipping in natural indigo. The design is a kamon in the center, which represents a family name. The first name of the previous owner is written in hiragana on the corner. This particular kamon has two yabane: feathers of an archer's arrow.

Aizome: Japanese cotton dyed with natural indigo, it is highly regarded and collected within Japan and across the world.
‘Ai’ (藍) means indigo and ‘some’ (染め) means dyeing. As a compound, 藍染め, is pronounced ‘aizome’ (ai-zo-me).

This is a large furoshiki carrying cloth made up of aizome panels hand sewn together.
This could be used as a table cloth, wall hanging, throw over furniture or as a furoshiki of course!

Excellent condition.
