Ooshima tsumugi is a superior quality Japanese artisan silk of Ooshima Island.

Silk threads are dyed in natural botanical dyes.

It is known as doro-oshima (doro translated as mud) as the fabric is dyed in the muddy waters of the rice paddies which affects the end result of the dyes used.

Hand loomed by artisans into very detailed designs. Tsumugi or pongee refers to the type of weave. The rough selvedge edges reinforce the idea of the wooden loom and the artisan's hands used to make it.

Dating back to early 1900s.

This silk was once part of a garment that has been taken apart for reuse.

There is some fading / discoloration. Majority is in great antique condition.

Smooth, slight sheen and light.

Beautiful for a scarf or pocket handkerchief.
