This high quality vintage indigo cotton was intended to make a Japanese traditional happi coat. It was made in the Showa era and has never been used. It is in fantastic condition.

Artisan made, hand dyed, natural indigo.

The kanji characters were created using the tsutsugaki resist dye technique. A rice resist paste (nori) is applied by hand through a cone funnel before dipping. The shape of the edges show how it was pulled taught for the process.

The circle symbol is a kamon which represents a family name, group or company. This one is a company, and characters describe the company name.

Medium weight cotton. The dye is deep and strong, a very dark blue. This may lighten somewhat once washed. It has not yet been washed at all and the dye is a little loose and rubs on the hands when handled.

It remains quite crisp but will soften with washing. The selvedge is on one side only.
