Japanese antique shima dating back to mid to early 1900s. Shima is a traditional Japanese striped woven ikat. Artisan made. Hand dyed, hand loomed ikat cotton. There are many boro patches which speaks to the value of the fabric and the Japanese spirit of carefully maintaining valued items for continued use.

This was once part of a kimono. There is a 10cm split into one edge exactly half way down the fabric. This would have helped make the collar of the kimono. Kimono are taken apart for expert washing. The panels are sewn back together into the original bolt so they can be carefully washed. This is known as araihari. Learn more on our blog here:

This is a great example of Japanese traditional boro utilitarian textiles. High quality cotton fabric was treasured by the peasant class and reused over and over again in clothing and domestic textiles. For more information on boro click here:

This is a supply fabric, we believe it could make a great scarf. The fabric has a little stiffness which may soften with washing. Otherwise, incorporate into your project; wall hanging, table runner, cushion cover, quilt, etc.
